Kumano Kodo · Coastal Route
The longest Kumano Kodo route, following the rugged Kii Peninsula coastline from Tanabe to Nachi-Katsuura via Shirahama and Cape Shiono.
Leave Tanabe city and follow the coastal road south through fishing villages and pine forests to the resort town of Shirahama, famous for its white sand beach.
Pass through the remote Kii Peninsula tip at Cape Shiono (潮岬) — the southernmost point of Honshu. Expect few facilities; plan your accommodation carefully.
The final stretch follows the coast north to Nachi-Katsuura, passing through fishing ports and climbing wooded headlands with ocean views.
Mobile coverage on the Ohechi is patchy on the remote coastal sections and non-existent on the headland climbs. A kumaphone uses a network that connects more easily on the Kumano Kodo, so you can use GPS and emergency calls.
